Claude Opus 4.7 Lands: What Indian Operators Should Test This Week

Most Feature Desk posts on a new Claude release will list ten things to test. Skip that. There is one unlock in Opus 4.7 that matters more than the rest for the Indian operator stack — the 1M-token context window. Build your week around testing that. Everything else is incremental.

Why the context window is the India unlock

Indian operators spend a disproportionate amount of analyst time on documents that don't fit in a 200K window. RBI master circulars run hundreds of pages. SEBI discussion papers and consultation responses run thicker. A DRHP runs 500–800 pages. A standard insurance policy book with annexures, riders, and IRDAI compliance overlay easily crosses 400 pages. Until now, AI workflows on these documents involved chunking, embedding, retrieving, reassembling — pipelines that broke quietly on cross-references and footnote-anchored definitions.

A 1M-token window swallows all of that whole. No chunking. No retrieval gymnastics. The model holds the document, the master circular it references, the prior amendment, and the operator's own SOP — simultaneously. The economic frame changes too. Engineering hours saved on RAG plumbing now go straight to the cost-per-resolved-query line.

The one test to run this week

Pick the longest, most cross-referenced document your team handles. For a BFSI shop, that's likely an RBI master direction with related circulars. For an EdTech, the NEP 2020 plus current UGC/AICTE notifications. For a healthcare operator, an NMC notification stack. For a listed company, your own DRHP and its post-listing analyst notes.

Drop the whole pile into a single prompt. Ask Opus 4.7 to do what your three smartest analysts collectively know how to do — find the contradictions, surface the unstated definitions, list the compliance hooks the operator team hasn't yet flagged. Measure two things: (1) hours saved versus the existing pipeline, (2) any factual miss your team catches in review. If hours-saved is meaningful and misses are rare, the model has earned a permanent seat in your regulatory workflow stack.

What not to spend time on this week

Skip the benchmark posts comparing Opus 4.7 to GPT-5 or Gemini 2.5 on MMLU. They will move two points in either direction by Q2 FY27. Skip the "agentic" demos that show Opus booking flights. The flight-booking agent is not the Indian operator's bottleneck. The bottleneck is people reading PDFs. Solve that.

The cost calculation

Opus 4.7 is the most expensive Claude tier. For the document workflow described above, the per-task cost still beats the loaded cost of an analyst-hour by an order of magnitude. The framing risk is putting Opus on tasks Haiku 4.5 should handle — customer support classification, simple email drafting, vendor email triage. Route by task complexity, not by reflex. Most Indian operator stacks should run a three-model fleet by H2 FY27 — Haiku for volume, Sonnet for default, Opus for the documents that used to take a week.

The Indian operator's AI stack just stopped being a RAG-plumbing project. It became a routing problem.
